§ 50836 Affordable Housing Tax Exemptions

Key Takeaways

  • •Local governments can give tax breaks for up to 20 years to housing projects that get federal aid under certain programs.
  • •If a redevelopment agency uses its own money (not just for low-income help) on these projects, they must report it every year.
  • •A special California fund can help certain groups (like nonprofits or companies) that get federal aid for housing projects.

Example

A nonprofit builds an apartment building for low-income families and gets federal aid for it.

The local government can say, 'You don’t have to pay local taxes on this building for 20 years.'
