§ 41755 Engine Emission Compliance Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Local areas must follow the state's rules for car and engine pollution checks, just like they follow their own local rules.
  • •Cars and engines usually only need a pollution test once every three years, unless someone messes with the engine or doesn’t take care of it.
  • •If there’s a sign that a car or engine is polluting too much, it can be tested more often to check.
  • •If there’s no pollution limit for a certain engine, it doesn’t need to be tested unless there’s a problem.

Example

You own a car and live in California. The state says all cars must pass a pollution test every few years.

Your local area can’t make up its own rules—it has to follow the state’s rules. So, you’ll need to get your car tested every three years. But if your car starts smoking a lot or someone reports it’s polluting, you might have to get it tested sooner.

(2)  A district may conduct source testing to determine compliance with mass emission limits where there is an indication of noncompliance. (3)  Except as required for purposes of paragraph (2), source testing of engine emissions for compliance purposes shall not be required of engines for which there is no applicable emission limit.
