§ 39657 Toxic Air Contaminant Identification

Key Takeaways

  • •The state must find and list bad chemicals in the air that can hurt people.
  • •If the federal government says a chemical is dangerous, the state must also say it’s dangerous.
  • •The state doesn’t have to follow extra steps to list these chemicals if the federal government already did.

Example

A factory releases a chemical called benzene into the air.

If the federal government says benzene is dangerous, the state must also list it as dangerous without extra steps. This helps keep the air safe for everyone.
