§ 39001 Air Quality Protection Efforts

Key Takeaways

  • •The law says clean air is important for everyone in the state.
  • •The state will work with cities and regions to keep the air clean.
  • •Air pollution doesn't stop at city or county lines, so everyone needs to work together.
  • •The state is split into different areas (called air basins) to help manage air quality better.

Example

A factory in one city is polluting the air, and the smoke is blowing into nearby towns.

The law says the state and nearby cities should work together to fix the problem, even if the factory is only in one city. They might make rules to help the factory pollute less.

§ 39001 Air Quality Protection Efforts

The Legislature, therefore, declares that this public interest shall be safeguarded by an intensive, coordinated state, regional, and local effort to protect and enhance the ambient air quality of the state. Since air pollution knows no political boundaries, the Legislature declares that a regional approach to the problem should be encouraged whenever possible and, to this end, the state is divided into air basins. The state should provide incentives for such regional strategies, respecting, when necessary, existing political boundaries. (Repealed and added by Stats. 1975, Ch. 957.)
