§ 35802 Fair Housing Loan Protection

Key Takeaways

  • •Banks can't refuse to give loans for houses just because the neighborhood is poor or has problems.
  • •Banks should give loans in areas where it's usually hard to get a home loan.
  • •More people who can pay back loans should get a chance to buy or fix up homes.
  • •The law wants to keep neighborhoods safe and nice, not let them get run down.

Example

A family wants to buy a house in a neighborhood where many houses are old and some are empty. The bank says no because the area looks 'risky'.

The bank can't do that. If the family can pay back the loan, the bank should give them the money to buy the house. This helps keep the neighborhood from getting worse.
