§ 16014 Earthquake Risk Assessment Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're building, fixing, or changing a building in a way that affects its structure, you need to check the ground for earthquake risks.
  • •You must have experts study the land and see if earthquakes could damage the building.
  • •Small buildings (one story, 4,000 sq ft or less) don’t need this check unless they’re in a special earthquake zone.
  • •The government can skip these rules if they think it’s safe to do so.

Example

You want to add a second floor to your house.

Before you can build, you need to hire experts to check if the ground under your house is safe and won’t cause problems in an earthquake. If your house is small and not in a risky zone, you might not need this check.
