§ 13839 District Board Appointment Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If a special area (like a water or school district) covers parts of more than one city, the city leaders can pick who runs it.
  • •The number of people each city picks depends on how many people live in that city's part of the area.
  • •Each city must pick at least one person, and they can even pick themselves if they want.
  • •There’s a limit to how many people can be picked—no more than the law allows.

Example

A water district covers parts of two cities, City A and City B. City A has 10,000 people in the district, and City B has 5,000.

City A gets to pick more people to run the water district because more of its residents are in it. But City B still gets to pick at least one person, even if it’s smaller. If City A’s mayor wants, they can also be on the water district board.
