§ 129730 Freestanding Outpatient Clinical Services

Key Takeaways

  • •Some hospital services can be in separate buildings, like offices, storage, or therapy rooms.
  • •Services like surgery or dialysis can also be in separate buildings, but only if they don’t take up more than 25% of the hospital’s patient care.
  • •The hospital must have a backup plan in case the separate building can’t be used, like during an emergency.
  • •The hospital can’t move important basic services (like emergency care) to a separate building unless they prove they can still handle emergencies.

Example

A hospital wants to move its physical therapy and dental clinics to a building across the street.

The hospital can do this, but it must make sure these services don’t take up more than 25% of its total patient care. It also needs a plan to keep offering these services if the building is damaged in an earthquake.
