§ 125130 Genetic Disorder Medical Care

Key Takeaways

  • •This law creates a special program to help people with certain serious genetic diseases get the medical care they need.
  • •The program also helps with other problems these diseases can cause, like money troubles or feeling sad.
  • •Only certain doctors and centers approved by the program can provide this special care.
  • •The program does not pay for long-term stays in hospitals or care homes.

Example

A child is born with phenylketonuria (PKU), a disease where the body can't process a part of food called phenylalanine.

The program will help pay for special food, doctor visits, and medicine the child needs to stay healthy. It can also help the family with counseling or other support if they're struggling with the costs or stress of the disease.
