§ 123105 Healthcare Provider Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •This law defines who counts as a 'health care provider'—like doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospitals.
  • •It explains what 'patient records' are—any notes or files about your health, treatment, or medical history.
  • •Some records are extra private, like mental health or drug abuse treatment notes.
  • •Only you (or your parent/guardian if you're a kid) can ask to see or copy your own medical records.

Example

If you go to the doctor for a broken arm, the notes they write about your X-rays and cast are your 'patient records'.

You can ask the doctor for a copy of those notes, but they might remove parts where someone else told them private info about you.
