§ 117810 Local Medical Waste Programs

Key Takeaways

  • •If a local agency doesn't want to handle medical waste, they can ask another agency to do it or decide to do it later.
  • •The decision to let another agency handle medical waste must be made by the local leaders and starts 90 days after they tell the state.
  • •Once a local agency starts handling medical waste, they must keep doing it until they officially decide to stop or the state says they can't do it anymore.
  • •If they want to stop, they must tell the state at least 180 days before they actually stop.

Example

A small town doesn't want to deal with medical waste from hospitals and clinics.

The town leaders can ask a nearby bigger city to handle the medical waste for them. They have to tell the state about this decision, and it will start 90 days later. If they ever want to stop this arrangement, they have to tell the state 180 days before they plan to stop.
