§ 117775 Medical Waste Transfer Stations

Key Takeaways

  • •A 'transfer station' is a special place where medical waste is moved, stored, or grouped together while being transported.
  • •This place must be allowed by the government and run by a registered waste hauler.
  • •It does not include places where the waste is first made or treated, like hospitals or clinics.

Example

A hospital has a lot of medical waste, like used needles and bandages, that needs to be thrown away safely.

The hospital can't just dump it anywhere. They call a special trash truck (a registered hauler) to take it away. The truck might stop at a 'transfer station' to drop off the waste before taking it to be destroyed. But the hospital’s own trash area isn’t called a transfer station—only the special offsite place is.
