§ 117115 Recreational Use Funding Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Money for fun activities on public water (like lakes) should come from the money made by those activities.
  • •The government can't charge super high fees just to make money—they have to keep prices fair.
  • •If the money from activities isn't enough, the government can use other ways to pay for things, just like they do for other stuff.

Example

A city runs a public lake where people pay to rent boats.

The money from boat rentals should pay for keeping the lake nice and safe. The city can't charge $100 for a boat ride if that's way too much—they have to keep prices fair. If boat rentals don't make enough money, the city can use other money (like taxes) to help pay for things, just like they do for parks or schools.
