§ 109000 Pfas In Food Packaging

This law bans the sale of food packaging in the state that contains certain harmful chemicals called PFAS starting January 1, 2023. It also says companies must use the safest possible alternative when replacing these chemicals.

Key Takeaways

  • •Starting January 1, 2023, no one can sell or give out food packaging with PFAS in the state.
  • •PFAS are harmful chemicals often used to make food packaging grease or water-resistant.
  • •Companies must replace PFAS with the safest possible option.
  • •This includes things like take-out boxes, wrappers, plates, and utensils made from plant fibers.

Example

A restaurant using take-out containers that have PFAS to make them grease-resistant.

Starting in 2023, the restaurant can't use these containers anymore because they contain banned chemicals. They must switch to containers that don't have PFAS and are safer.
