§ 104775 School Dental Prevention Programs

This law lets local health groups run free dental health programs for kids in preschool through sixth grade (and special‑needs classes), teaching them about teeth and giving simple preventive care like sealants, but not fillings, braces, or tooth pulling.

Key Takeaways

  • •Programs can be offered to preschool‑through‑6th‑grade students and special‑needs classes.
  • •Approved sponsors include city or county health departments, school districts, or other nonprofit agencies.
  • •The program must include education about dental health and preventive services like plaque control and sealants.
  • •All dental work must be supervised by a licensed dentist; the program cannot do fillings, braces, or pull teeth.

Example

The county health department sets up a program at the local elementary school where teachers talk about brushing and eating healthy, and a dentist‑supervised team puts sealants on the kids' back teeth.

The program follows the law because it is run by an approved sponsor, it teaches kids how to keep teeth clean, and it gives preventive services (sealants) under a dentist’s supervision, while not doing any fillings or extractions.
