§ 102325 Marriage Certificate Numbering Rules

This law tells the local registrar to give each marriage certificate a number that starts at 1 and goes up by one for every new certificate in the same calendar year, using either the year the wedding happened or the year it was recorded.

Key Takeaways

  • •Numbering starts at 1 each calendar year.
  • •You can base the year on when the wedding happened or when it was recorded.
  • •Each new certificate just adds one to the previous number.

Example

A town registrar issues a marriage certificate for a wedding that took place on March 5, 2023. It is the first wedding recorded that year, so the certificate gets number 1. The next wedding recorded on June 12, 2023 gets number 2, and so on.

The first certificate each year is always #1, and each later one just adds one to the previous number.

How to Calculate

Certificate Number = 1 + (N – 1) where N = the order of the certificate in that calendar year (first = 1, second = 2, …).

  1. Decide which year you are counting in (the year the wedding happened or the year it was registered).
  2. Count how many certificates have already been given in that year before the one you are numbering.
  3. Add 1 to that count. The result is the new certificate’s number.
