§ 663 Peace Officer Vessel Enforcement

This law says police officers can stop and board any boat if they think a law or rule has been broken.

Key Takeaways

  • •Any peace officer (state, city, county, etc.) must enforce this chapter and its rules.
  • •Officers can stop and board a vessel when they have probable cause to think a law was broken.
  • •Probable cause means the officer has a good reason to believe a violation happened.

Example

A police officer sees a speedboat racing too fast on a lake and thinks it broke a speed limit.

Because the officer believes the boat is breaking the law, the officer can pull the boat up, check the driver, and issue a ticket or warning.
