Key Takeaways

  • •The board has five members.
  • •Two members are appointed by the county supervisors, two by the city council.
  • •The fifth member is chosen by a special election board (supervisors + five council members chosen by the mayor) and becomes the chairman.
  • •A majority vote is needed to pick the chairman.
  • •The board also picks an auditor, who must be approved by both the county supervisors and the city council.

Example

A new port manager needs to be added to the board after one member retires.

Two people will be picked by the county supervisors, two by the city council, and the last one will be chosen by a special election group made up of the supervisors and five city council members chosen by the mayor. That last person becomes the board chair.
