§ 285 Steam Vessel Light Exemptions

This rule says that the article’s rules don’t work if there’s another rule about lights on steam boats or about how steam boat pilots should act when they hear each other’s whistles.

Key Takeaways

  • •If another law tells you how to use lights on a steam boat, ignore this article’s rules.
  • •If steam boat pilots hear each other’s whistles, they follow the special pilot rules, not this article.
  • •This article only applies when none of those other specific rules are in place.

Example

Two steamboats are coming toward each other on a river and the pilots hear each other’s steam whistles.

Because the pilots can hear the whistles, they must follow the special pilot‑government rules for steam vessels, not the rules in this article.
