§ 1256 Pilotage Tariff Definitions

This law spells out the meanings of words like executive director, petitioner, stakeholder, and tariff for the process of setting pilotage rates.

Key Takeaways

  • •The board’s executive director is the person in charge of the board.
  • •A “petitioner” is anyone who files a request to set or change pilotage tariffs.
  • •An “intervenor” is another interested party the judge lets join the case.
  • •A “stakeholder” is anyone with a big financial interest in the pilot fees, whether they file a petition or just watch.
  • •“Tariff” is the list of rates and fees for pilot services.

Example

A shipping company wants the board to change the fees pilots charge ships to guide them into port.

The company can file a petition (becoming a “petitioner”) and anyone with a big financial stake, like another shipping firm, can join as an “intervenor” or “stakeholder” so they can argue for or against the new rates.
