§ 1114 Pilot Licensing Definitions

This law tells us who can be called a “pilot” – basically anyone officially licensed to steer big boats in certain waters.

Key Takeaways

  • •A pilot is anyone licensed by this division to steer vessels (but not an inland pilot).
  • •People who got a bar‑pilot license for San Francisco, San Pablo, or Suisun Bay before 1 Jan 1985 count as pilots.
  • •An inland pilot who later becomes a pilot under Section 1141 is also a pilot.
  • •Anyone licensed under subdivision (b) of Section 1171 is included too.

Example

A captain hires a person who has a special license to guide a cargo ship through the busy waters of San Francisco Bay.

Because that person has the proper license, the law says they are a “pilot” and can legally help steer the ship.
