§ 9512 Governor'S Veto Override Process

Key Takeaways

  • •If the Governor doesn't sign a bill and sends it back with complaints, the Legislature can still pass it if they really want to.
  • •They need a special big vote (more than half) to pass it again.
  • •If they do pass it again, the bill becomes a law even without the Governor's signature.
  • •This rule also applies to bills about spending money, even if the Governor only dislikes parts of it.

Example

The Legislature passes a bill to build more parks. The Governor doesn't like it and sends it back with notes saying it's too expensive.

The Legislature can vote on the bill again. If enough of them (a big majority) still say yes, the bill becomes a law, and the parks get built—even if the Governor didn’t sign it.
