§ 87105 Public Official Conflict Disclosure

Key Takeaways

  • •If a government worker has a money-related reason to care about a decision, they must tell everyone about it clearly.
  • •They can't join the talk or vote on that decision—they have to leave the room while it's being discussed.
  • •They can only come back to speak about it when it's the public's turn to talk, just like any regular person.

Example

A city council member owns a store, and the council is voting on a new rule that would help stores like theirs make more money.

The council member must tell everyone they own the store and leave the room while the council talks and votes. They can only come back later to share their opinion during the public comment time.
