§ 87103 Public Official Financial Conflicts

Key Takeaways

  • •A public official can't make decisions if they or their family will get special money from it.
  • •If the official owns $2,000 or more in a business or property, they can't decide things that help it.
  • •If someone gave the official $250 or more in gifts in the last year, the official can't help that person.
  • •Even if the official doesn't own something directly, if their family or a business they control does, it still counts.

Example

A city council member owns a big apartment building worth $50,000. The city is voting on a new rule that would lower taxes for apartment owners.

The council member can't vote on this rule because they own property worth more than $2,000, and the rule would save them money. It's not fair to everyone else.
