§ 65353 General Plan Public Hearings

Key Takeaways

  • •The city or county must hold a public meeting before changing big plans for how land can be used.
  • •They have to tell people about the meeting, especially if the changes affect what can be built on their land.
  • •If too many people are affected (more than 1,000), they can just put a notice in the paper instead of mailing everyone.
  • •If they’re already having another meeting about similar stuff, they can combine the notices.

Example

The city wants to change a rule so that a quiet neighborhood can now have big apartment buildings.

The city must hold a public meeting and tell everyone in the neighborhood about it. If lots of people live there, they might just put an ad in the local newspaper instead of mailing each person.

(c) If the number of owners to whom notice would be mailed or delivered pursuant to subdivision (b) is greater than 1,000, a local agency may, in lieu of mailed or delivered notice, provide notice by publishing notice pursuant to paragraph (4) of subdivision (a) of Section 65091. (d) If the hearings held under this section are held at the same time as hearings under Section 65854, the notice of the hearing may be combined. (Amended by Stats. 2011, Ch. 382, Sec. 5.
