§ 62570 Commercial Development Fees

Key Takeaways

  • •A 'commercial development project' is when someone gets a permit to build new commercial buildings, like stores or offices, but not just to fix up an old one.
  • •A 'commercial linkage fee' is a fee charged to the builder of these new commercial projects to help pay for more housing, because new businesses often mean more people need homes.
  • •This fee is not a tax or special charge, but it’s required by law for certain big building projects.

Example

A company wants to build a big new shopping mall in a city.

The city can charge the company a 'commercial linkage fee' when they approve the building permit. This extra money will be used to help build more homes because the new mall will bring in more workers who need places to live.
