§ 57458 Dissolved District Debt Payments

Key Takeaways

  • •If a special district (like a local government area) is shut down, the new group in charge must keep paying its old debts.
  • •The new group has to collect taxes or fees from the same properties that were in the old district to pay off those debts.
  • •This keeps happening every year until all the old debts (including interest) are fully paid off.
  • •The taxes or fees must be collected the same way the old district used to do it.

Example

A small town shuts down its special water district because it merged with a bigger city. The old water district still owes money for a big pipe project.

The bigger city now has to collect extra taxes from the homes and businesses in the old water district area every year until the pipe project is fully paid off. They can’t just forget about the debt.
