§ 57406 City Property Tax Redemption

Key Takeaways

  • •If a city stops existing, people can still get their property back if they didn't pay taxes on time.
  • •To get the property back, they must pay the county the amount they would have paid if the city still existed.
  • •Anyone who cares about the property (like the owner) can do this.

Example

A small town called Happyville stops being a city. Before it stopped, Mr. Smith didn’t pay his property taxes for two years. Now, the county says his house will be sold if he doesn’t pay.

Even though Happyville isn’t a city anymore, Mr. Smith can still save his house. He has to pay the county the same amount he would have paid if Happyville still existed. This way, he gets his house back.
