§ 56870 District Dissolution Petition Signatures

• •To ask to close down a special district (like a water or fire district), you need signatures from people who live there.
• •For places where only registered voters decide, you need either: 10% of the voters OR 10% of landowners who also own at least 10% of the land's total value.
• •For places where only landowners decide, you need signatures from 10% of those landowners who also own at least 10% of the land's total value.
• •The rules are a little different if another law (Section 56871) says so.

A small town has a special fire district, and some people want to close it down.

If the town has 1,000 registered voters, they need at least 100 signatures (10%) from those voters to ask to close the district. Or, if 50 landowners own 10% of the town's land value, they could sign instead.
