§ 56865 District Consolidation Petition Signatures

Key Takeaways

  • •If people want to combine two or more areas (districts), they need to get signatures from people who live there.
  • •For areas where only registered voters can sign, at least 5% of the voters in each area must sign.
  • •For areas where landowners can sign, at least 5% of the landowners in each area must sign, and these landowners must also own at least 5% of the total land value in each area.

Example

Imagine two small towns, Town A and Town B, want to become one big town. They need to get signatures from people who live there to make this happen.

In Town A, if there are 1,000 registered voters, at least 50 people (5% of 1,000) need to sign the petition. The same rule applies to Town B. If the towns have landowner voters, then 5% of the landowners who also own at least 5% of the total land value in each town must sign.
