§ 54256 Privatization Referendum Cooling Period

Key Takeaways

  • •If people vote 'no' on a plan to let a private company do a government job, the government can't try again for a year.
  • •The government can't make a new deal for the same job right away.
  • •This rule stops the government from ignoring the vote and doing the same thing again quickly.

Example

A city wants to hire a private company to collect trash instead of using city workers. The city votes on it, and most people say 'no'.

The city can't try to hire another private trash company for a whole year. They have to wait.
