§ 53235 Ethics Training For Officials

Key Takeaways

  • •If a local government pays its leaders (like city council members) or pays them back for work expenses, then all those leaders must take ethics training.
  • •School board members and charter school leaders must take ethics training, even if they don’t get paid.
  • •The training must be at least 2 hours long and happen every 2 years.
  • •The training can be done at home, in person, or online, and leaders get a certificate to prove they did it.

Example

A city council member gets paid $500 a month for their work.

Because the city pays them, they must take a 2-hour ethics training every 2 years. If they don’t, they’re breaking the rules.
