§ 51071 Urban Development And Open-Space Lands

Key Takeaways

  • •This law says that cities and towns are growing too fast and taking over open spaces like farms, parks, and natural areas.
  • •Open spaces are important because they help the economy, provide food, give us nice views, and let us enjoy nature.
  • •The law wants to make sure these open spaces don’t disappear so we can keep using them for farming, fun, and keeping nature safe.

Example

Imagine a big farm on the edge of a city where people grow fruits and vegetables. The city keeps building new houses and stores, and soon the farm might be turned into more buildings.

This law says that the farm is important because it grows food and keeps the area beautiful. It wants to stop the city from building on the farm so people can keep growing food there and enjoy the open space.

The Legislature finds that the rapid growth and spread of urban development is encroaching upon, or eliminating open-space lands which are necessary not only for the maintenance of the economy of the state, but also for the assurance of the continued availability of land for the production of food and fiber, for the enjoyment of scenic beauty, for recreation and for the use and conservation of natural resources.
