§ 31913 Peace Officer Pension Protections

Key Takeaways

  • •A peace officer's pension or retirement money cannot be taken away by the government for taxes.
  • •This money is also safe from being taken if the officer owes someone money, except in very specific cases allowed by another law.
  • •If someone tries to give away or sell their right to this money, that agreement is not valid.

Example

A retired police officer owes money to a credit card company.

The credit card company cannot take the officer's pension money to pay off the debt, because the law protects it.
