§ 31848 Parent Survivor Benefits

• •If a worker dies before retiring and was part of the system for at least 10 years straight, their parents can get monthly money if no one else (except the worker's spouse or kids) is getting death benefits.
• •The parents must be alive when the worker dies to get this money.
• •The amount of money the parents get each month is based on what the worker was earning when they died.
• •The exact amount is figured out using another part of the law (Section 31849).

A firefighter who worked for 12 years dies in a car crash. He has no spouse or kids, but his mom is still alive. No one else is getting death benefits from his job.

Since the firefighter worked for more than 10 years and his mom is alive, she can get monthly money based on what he was earning when he died.
