§ 31618 Retiree Benefit Reserve Fund

Key Takeaways

  • •There's a special savings account called the Supplemental Retiree Benefit Reserve for retired workers.
  • •Money is added to this account twice a year from extra profits after other important accounts are filled.
  • •The board decides how to use this money to help retired workers.
  • •The main savings account (Contingency Reserve) must always keep at least 1% of its total money.

Example

Imagine a retirement fund like a big piggy bank for workers who have retired.

Every six months, if the piggy bank makes extra money after paying for important things, half of that extra money goes into a special smaller piggy bank just for retired workers. The people in charge decide how to share this smaller piggy bank's money with the retired workers.
