§ 25827 County Waste Collection Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •Counties can decide how to collect trash and set rules for it.
  • •They can charge people money for trash pickup, either as a tax or a fee.
  • •If trash pickup is required, people who don’t need it often (like empty land) can get a discount or not pay.
  • •This doesn’t apply to places that already have their own trash pickup rules.

Example

A family lives in a house in a rural area where the county picks up trash every week.

The county can charge them a fee for this service. If the family’s neighbor has empty land with no trash, they might not have to pay or could get a discount.

The tax or charge shall not be applicable to property within existing garbage disposal districts. (b) If the county provides compulsory collection service, a resolution or ordinance adopted pursuant to this section shall provide for reduced charges, rebates, or exemptions for properties that do not require regular collection service.
