§ 25661 Fishing Access Land Rights

Key Takeaways

  • •If a river or stream is a public fishing spot, people can walk along its banks to fish.
  • •If the landowner next to the river doesn’t want people walking there, they can say no.
  • •If the landowner says no, the county can try to buy the right to let people walk there anyway.

Example

A river runs through Mr. Smith’s farm, and people have always fished there. Mr. Smith doesn’t want people walking on his land anymore.

The county can try to buy the right from Mr. Smith to let fishermen walk along the riverbank, even if he says no.
