§ 25586 County Abandonment Voter Petition

Key Takeaways

  • •If 200 or more voters in a county sign a petition against stopping a service or closing something, the county leaders must listen.
  • •The leaders can either stop the plan to abandon it or let all the voters in the county decide in the next big election or a special vote.
  • •This rule makes sure big changes don’t happen without asking the people first.

Example

Imagine the county wants to close down a popular park to save money.

If 200 people sign a paper saying they don’t want the park to close, the county leaders have to either keep the park open or let everyone in the county vote on it in the next election.
