§ 25123 Ordinance Effective Date Exceptions

Key Takeaways

  • •Most new rules start working 30 days after they are made.
  • •Some rules start right away, like those about elections, taxes, or emergencies.
  • •For emergency rules, leaders must say why it's urgent and most of them must agree.
  • •Rules about worker pay or deals with worker groups also start immediately.

Example

The city passes a new rule to fix potholes faster because they are causing car crashes.

If the city says fixing potholes is an emergency and most leaders agree, the rule starts right away to keep people safe.
