§ 23369 County Creation Election Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •More than half the people in each county and in the new county must vote 'yes' to create a new county.
  • •The new county isn't official until its leaders are elected in the next big state election.
  • •The old counties have up to two years to hand over their jobs to the new county.

Example

Imagine two small towns, Town A and Town B, want to become a new county called Town C.

More than half the people in Town A, Town B, and the future Town C must vote 'yes' to make Town C. Even if they vote 'yes', Town C isn't real until its leaders are elected. Town A and Town B then have up to two years to give their jobs, like fixing roads or running schools, to Town C.
