§ 23285 County Boundary Tax Filing

Key Takeaways

  • •If a county's borders change, the leaders of both counties must tell the state and their own tax offices about the new borders by December 1.
  • •They have to send a written description of the new borders and a map showing them.
  • •If they don’t send this info on time, the new borders won’t count for taxes or property values until the next year.

Example

Imagine two counties, County A and County B, decide to swap a small piece of land so that a road is entirely in one county.

The leaders of both counties must write down the new borders and draw a map. They have to send this to the state and their tax offices by December 1. If they miss the deadline, the new borders won’t be used for taxes until the following year.
