§ 23201 County Boundary Change Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •This law defines special words used when talking about changing county borders.
  • •An 'affected county' is one that loses or gains land in a border change.
  • •An 'affected territory' is an area without its own city government that might move to a different county.
  • •An 'inhabited territory' is a place where at least 12 registered voters live.

Example

A small town with 15 registered voters wants to switch from County A to County B.

Because the town has more than 12 registered voters, it is considered an 'inhabited territory' under this law. County A is the 'initiating county' if it starts the process, and County B is the 'affected county' because it would gain the town's land.
