§ 21227 Retired Faculty Service Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •Retired people can work part-time at California State University without losing their retirement benefits, but they can't work more than 960 hours in a year or half the hours they worked the year before they retired, whichever is less.
  • •If a retired person got unemployment money from the same job in the last year, they can't use this rule to work again without losing benefits.
  • •If they do take a job after getting unemployment money, they have to quit right away and can't work again for a whole year under this rule.

Example

A retired professor wants to teach a few classes at the same university where they used to work full-time.

If the professor worked 2000 hours the year before retiring, they can only work 1000 hours now (half of 2000). But if they got unemployment money from the university in the last year, they can't teach at all without losing their retirement benefits.
