§ 21100 Local Miscellaneous Retirement Benefits

Key Takeaways

  • •This law tells you how much pension money you get when you retire, based on your age and how long you worked.
  • •The older you are when you retire, the bigger the fraction of your final salary you get as pension.
  • •Your pension is your boss’s contribution plus your own savings from work, multiplied by the fraction from the table.
  • •If you switch to this pension plan later in your job, your pension is calculated in two parts: before and after the switch.

Example

Imagine you are 55 years old and worked for 20 years. Your final salary was $60,000.

The law says at age 55, you get 0.8334 of your final salary for each year you worked. So, 0.8334 x 20 x $60,000 = $1,000,080. But this is split between what you saved and what your boss adds. You don’t get the full $1,000,080; it’s a mix of your savings and your boss’s money.
