§ 20962 Service Credit Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If you work full-time for a year in certain jobs (like teachers or state workers), you get one year of service credit for your retirement.
  • •The rules for what counts as a full year depend on how you're paid: by school year, months, days, or hours.
  • •If you work less than a full year, you get a partial credit based on how much you worked.
  • •Different jobs have different rules—like teachers need an academic year, while hourly workers need 1,720 hours.

Example

A teacher works the full school year at a public school.

Since they worked the whole academic year, they get one full year of service credit for their retirement.
