§ 20834 Contracting Agency Contributions

Key Takeaways

  • •If a company stops being an employer, they still have to pay money into a fund for their workers.
  • •The money paid by the company is only for the workers, retired workers, and their families.
  • •If a company has no workers who can get benefits, they don’t have to be an employer under this rule.

Example

A small town stops employing its own firefighters and hires a private company instead.

The town must still pay money into a fund for the firefighters they used to employ. This money is only for those firefighters, retired firefighters, and their families. If the town had no firefighters left who could get benefits, they wouldn’t have to keep paying.
