§ 20674 Retirement Contribution Rate Adjustment

Key Takeaways

  • •If you stop working for a year or more and then start again, your retirement contribution rate goes up.
  • •The rate is based on how old you were when you first started working, plus the number of years you were away from work.
  • •Women used to have different rates, but since 1977, everyone pays the same rate.

Example

John stops working for 3 years and then starts a new job.

John's retirement contribution rate will be higher because he was away from work for 3 years. His new rate is based on his age when he first started working, plus those 3 years.
