§ 17271 Warrant Payment And Redemption

Key Takeaways

  • •If the state owes you money (like a special check called a 'warrant'), they have to pay you back on the date written on it.
  • •If the warrant earns interest over time, the state must pay that extra money on the dates they promised.
  • •Sometimes, the state can pay you back early, but they might pay a little extra (up to 10% more) if they do.

Example

Imagine the state borrowed $100 from you and wrote you a special check (warrant) that says they’ll pay you back in 5 years. They also promise to pay you a little extra (interest) every year until then.

The state must pay you the $100 on the exact date in 5 years. If they also owe you $5 every year in interest, they have to pay that on time too. If they decide to pay you early, they might give you up to $110 instead of $100, plus any interest they owe you so far.
