§ 14715 Veterans’ Home Water Priority

Key Takeaways

  • •The Veterans’ Home in California gets first dibs on all the water stored in Rector Dam in Napa County.
  • •If there’s extra water after the Veterans’ Home gets what it needs, the state can give some to other places like the Napa State Hospital or the State Game Farm.
  • •The state can buy, rent, or take land to move this extra water to those other places if needed.

Example

Imagine there’s a big tank of water (Rector Dam) in Napa. The Veterans’ Home gets to drink from it first before anyone else.

If the Veterans’ Home doesn’t use all the water, the leftover can go to nearby hospitals or farms. The state can even make a path (like a pipe) to send the water there.

§ 14715 Veterans’ Home Water Priority

The Veterans’ Home of California, for all purposes including irrigation and domestic, shall have the first and prior right to all available water stored in Rector Dam on state property in Napa County. Said right shall be prior to any allocation of said waters for the use of any other state institutions, including the State Game Farm and the Napa State Hospital. In the event that there is more water available than necessary to meet the requirements of the Veterans’ Home of California, the department may take and conduct from the dam such quantity of surplus water as may be determined by the Department of Water Resources to be necessary for the use of the Napa State Hospital and other state establishments located in the County of Napa, including the State Game Farm, and rights-of-way may be acquired, pursuant to the Property Acquisition Law, Part 11 (commencing with Section 15850) of Division 3 of Title 2, by purchase, lease, or condemnation for that purpose. (Amended by Stats. 1975, Ch. 1239.)
